Nelson Sportive

Norfolk is the birthplace to perhaps the most famous and historic maritime hero to come from our shores – Lord Horatio Nelson.

Whether you live with us here in Norfolk or you are travelling to join us at Pedal Norfolk, as you cross into Norfolk by road you will be reminded about the close relationship and bond Norfolk retains with Nelson as the county sign declares it loudly and proudly!

At Pedal Norfolk we are celebrating our Norfolk hero with a brace of cycle sportives in his name – The Nelson on Saturday and The Victory (named after his most famous ship) on Sunday. Each ride has its own route offering riders two unique rides over the festival weekend, but they will both pass through Nelson’s birthplace of Durham Market to pay homage to our Norfolk hero.

Of course, as you would expect at TPR Events, the medals for each ride interlock giving you the opportunity not only to celebrate Nelson with upto 200 miles over the weekend but also a brace of interlocking souvenir medals that your descendants can take to Antiques Roadshow in 100 years time as an artefact of Norfolk’s Nelson history!

Nelson Ride Options

100 Mile Route

The brand new Nelson Sportive is based at the Pedal Norfolk event village at the prestigious Holkham Hall estate.

Our new route flows through the private estate roads south towards Fakenham, then east towards the beautiful market town of Holt where Bakers & Larners of Holt,  noted purveyors of fine coffee and cakes, have laid on a treat of feedstop. From here it’s a spin over to Saxthorpe, Bawdeswell and then westwards towards Litcham and the Massinghams. Beautiful quiet roads and villages await you before you head north to Dersingham and the coast once again. From here, hoist the flags as you pass through Nelson’s birthplace enroute back to Holkham.

Expect the route to be a little lumpier than you may expect for a Norfolk Sportive and perhaps tougher than the map and gradients indicate. The scenery and splendour of North Norfolk will be a fair trade though.

Route Features

  • Distance – 100 Miles
  • Elevation – over 4000ft
  • Start time – 8:00am
  • £35 inclusive of lunch and feedstops

TPR Events Difficulty Rating (This difficulty is worked out from the elevation and riding the routes ourselves)

8/10

75 Mile Route

The Nelson 75 starts along the 100 route and shaves 25 miles from the southern most leg taking you below Fakenham around Syderstone and the Raynhams to rejoin the 100 at Sedgesford so you still have the opportunity of a full salute at Nelson’s birthplace just a Canon shot from Holkham.

Expect the route to be a little lumpier than you may expect for a Norfolk Sportive and perhaps tougher than the map and gradients indicate. The scenery and splendour of North Norfolk will be a fair trade though.

Route Features

  • Distance – 75 Miles
  • Elevation – over 3200ft
  • Start time – 8:00am
  • £30 inclusive of lunch and feedstops

TPR Events Difficulty Rating (This difficulty is worked out from the elevation and riding the routes ourselves)

8/10

50 Mile Route

The Nelson 50 miles is a treat. Starting with the 100 you will follow the southern 75 cut through but then head north after Great Ryburgh to pass through Pudding Norton (got to have a selfie with that village sign) and skirt Fakenham to head back north through the pretty North Creek area.

Expect the route to be a little lumpier than you may expect for a Norfolk Sportive and perhaps tougher than the map and gradients indicate. The scenery and splendour of North Norfolk will be a fair trade though.

Route Features

  • Distance – 50 Miles
  • Elevation – over 2300ft
  • Start time – 9.00am
  • £25 inclusive of feedstops

TPR Events Difficulty Rating (This difficulty is worked out from the elevation and riding the routes ourselves)

You have all day to stop and soak up the views, local cafes and pubs and watch the day go by. You are on Norfolk time…

Pedal Norfolk Festival

The Nelson Sportive is part of the 2-day Pedal Norfolk Cycling Festival set in the prestigious Holkham Hall estate. We have teamed up with the Holkham team to bring you a weekend celebration of all the things we love about the cycling lifestyle – great rides on quiet roads, good friends and craic, food, music, and possibly a cheeky celebratory drink as the sun sets across the wonderful parkland setting.

You can book camping for Friday and Saturday night with street food, bar and live music available until 10pm on Saturday. This is a very, very rare opportunity to camp, caravan or motorhome in the beautifully idyllic Holkham estate in North Norfolk so book your accommodation early.

Go Doubler at Pedal Norfolk!

How often do you get the chance to ride an event both days of the weekend?

Well at the Pedal Norfolk Festival  that is exactly how we have designed it. Two road events on different courses, mix it up with a road sportive Saturday and a gravel ride Sunday or if you’re completely nuts, Insanity plus Victory for a 250 mile weekend. Ultimate kudos from your fellow riders…

Not only will your bespoke individual medals interlock, we will offer you a free Pedal Norfolk Doubler gift on Sunday! Go Double at Pedal Norfolk!
